HighPoint Electric: Prioritizing Mental Health and Safety in Construction

Safety as a Core Value
Safety is a core value at HighPoint Electric, ingrained in the culture from the top down. Leadership sets the standard by sharing the personal significance of safety and empowering the executive leadership team to communicate this message throughout the organization. Project managers are engaged to carry this culture into the field, elevating safety awareness among the crews. Regular safety discussions take place during weekly project status meetings, ensuring that safety planning is integrated into every project. This collaborative effort fosters a culture where every employee feels empowered to speak up and prioritize safety.

Prioritizing Mental Health in a Challenging Industry
HighPoint Electric recognizes the critical importance of mental health in an industry often burdened by challenging demographics and increasing workforce pressures. In light of the skilled labor shortage and troubling suicide rates among construction workers, they have proactively implemented measures to support employee well-being.

In collaboration with Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services, HighPoint offers an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) that provides multiple counseling sessions, financial planning, estate planning, and more—entirely free of charge for employees and their families. Furthermore, they engaged the services of a licensed Chaplain who attends employee meetings and events to foster personal connections with staff and their families.

This comprehensive approach ensures the HighPoint team has access to essential resources that enhance mental health and cultivate a supportive work environment.

Continuous Improvement in Safety Practices
This year, HighPoint implemented continuous improvements to their safety programs, drawing on valuable lessons from the previous year. A newly formed safety committee is actively enhancing their processes by reviewing first aid provisions, researching advanced tools for teams, and assessing potential hazards. Engaging in meaningful discussions promotes ongoing learning and improvement, rather than simply ticking boxes.

HighPoint closely monitors leading indicators, such as behaviors linked to injuries, to facilitate employee education on injury prevention and to integrate safety into daily operations. By understanding and addressing the factors that contribute to workplace injuries, they foster an environment where safety becomes second nature, ensuring that their workforce remains protected and healthy.

Building a Thriving Work Environment
By putting proactive safety measures in place, offering strong mental health support, and encouraging open communication, HighPoint not only safeguards its employees but also cultivates an environment where they can thrive. This comprehensive approach meets the team’s immediate needs while building a foundation for a resilient and engaged workforce. As HighPoint Electric grows, its dedication to these core values will be crucial, supporting long-term success and well-being for all employees.
