The West Michigan Construction Institute (WMCI) is sparking new growth in the skilled trades by launching its own state-approved electrical apprenticeship program this fall. This marks a major milestone in WMCI’s mission to strengthen the construction workforce pipeline in West Michigan.
For years, demand for electrical apprenticeship training has far exceeded supply. Apprentices and contractors alike have voiced frustration over long waitlists and limited options. Now, WMCI is meeting that demand head-on—creating a seamless path from high school training to professional apprenticeship, all under one roof.
“Many of our strongest supporters are electrical contractors, and they’ve encouraged us to build this program since the beginning. The timing is right—and we’re ready.”

Why WMCI's Program Stands Out
WMCI is a construction-dedicated trade school, which gives it a unique advantage in creating programs built specifically for the jobsite. Every instructor, every student, every classroom and lab is focused on bettering the region’s construction industry.
The electrical apprenticeship program blends classroom instruction with hands-on, lab-based learning, giving students real-world training in a setting designed to mirror the work they’ll perform on the job. Apprentices will also learn alongside peers in WMCI’s other trade programs—just like they would in the field.
“Our students learn best by doing. That’s why lab-based training and cross-trade collaboration are central to our model.”

Growing Talent, Building Careers
The goal of the program is clear: prepare apprentices for licensure and long-term success in the electrical trade.
WMCI will use the respected Mike Holt curriculum, with a strong focus on the National Electrical Code and core competencies required for daily work. As a state-approved RTI provider, WMCI ensures that apprentices’ classroom hours are fully aligned with state requirements and properly documented toward licensure.
Students who complete the 576 required instruction hours will earn a WMCI certificate of completion and a Mike Holt certificate, setting them up to take the state licensing exam.
Industry-Led, Employer Backed
“We’re not building this in a vacuum. Contractors are walking alongside us to help make this the best training program in the region.”
